Statement:
Situated with exploring the fundamental and the literal of the complications that the machine in contemporary art can cause, my work explores the duality associated with the relationship between the artist and the machine. Additionally, my work explores an unfamiliar notion of Neutralism through the combination of automated appliance and the literal of the word, not having any particular bias towards a notion of art other than the marks made by the machine. This notion developed from the theory of machines being coherently neutral due to their absence of psychological input into them making art, and the question ““Machines can’t write signatures that mean anything, make art, or write literature. Can they?”
Originally inspired by the works of Natasha Kidd and her ‘disappointed with static artwork’, something which I paralleled with a desire to disregard any ownership of my work. Correlating with this statement, the relationship of a machine making art and the artist corresponded with me. Using this initial spark as influence, this practice based research orientated on my specialist subjects I plan to expose the machine’s being of belonging and purpose in contemporary art.
